Help and FAQ
Quick answers about the charts, using Pelagic State on the water, and your account. Can't find what you need? We're happy to help.
Getting started
What is Pelagic State?
Ocean-intelligence charts for recreational pelagic fishing. It brings satellite sea temperature, water colour, currents, sea level and depth onto one chart, and highlights where conditions line up, so you can plan where to start looking.
What area does it cover?
The waters around New Zealand's North Island.
Do I need an account?
No. The demo shows the full app on a recent example day with no sign-up. For live data, create a free account: new accounts get 14 days of Pro free.
What devices does it work on?
Any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer: Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. There's nothing to install.
Can I put it on my phone's home screen?
Yes, and it then opens like an app.
iPhone: open the charts in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
Android: open the charts in Chrome, tap the ⋮ menu, then Add to Home screen or Install app.
The charts
How fresh is the data?
Each layer shows its own age. SST Latest updates through the day; SST Cloud Free is daily and can be up to about two days old; other layers follow their providers' schedules. When newer data arrives while the chart is open, a “New ocean data · Tap to update” notice appears.
SST Latest or SST Cloud Free: which should I use?
SST Latest is the freshest, but cloud leaves gaps (the last clear reading from the past 12 hours is kept). SST Cloud Free is complete with no gaps, but older. Many people check both: Cloud Free for the big picture, Latest for today's detail.
Why are there blank patches on SST Latest?
Satellites can't see sea temperature through cloud. Where no clear reading has come through in the last 12 hours, the water is left blank rather than guessed.
What does Pelagic Zone Edges show?
Where temperature breaks, water-colour edges and eddies line up, graded Good, Better and Best. It's an estimate of better odds, not a fish detector. How it works.
Why do the colours change as I move around?
Auto colour range stretches the temperature colours across the water on screen, so small differences stand out. Turn it off in the Layers panel to set a fixed range.
Where does the depth come from?
Around New Zealand, from the official LINZ nautical chart. Further offshore, an approximate figure from GEBCO's global seafloor map, shown with ≈.
Is there a guide to every layer?
Yes. In the app, open the Layer Guide from the Layers panel or from Settings, Help & About.

How do I use it without signal?
Before you leave, tap the download button, frame your fishing area and download it. When the signal drops the app uses your saved copy and shows its age. You can also switch on Offline mode to stop it trying the network. More about offline.
How big is an offline download?
The app shows the size before you download. As a guide, an area of about 180 km by 180 km is roughly 20 MB for the map, plus the conditions for the region. Download on Wi-Fi if you can.
Why did my track stop when my iPhone locked?
On iPhone, web apps pause when the phone is locked, which pauses the track. While a trip is recording, Pelagic State keeps the screen on. Keep the phone mounted and plugged in, and turn off Auto-Lock if needed. An App Store app with background tracking is on the way.
What do marks save?
The position, the type (Fish, Structure, Bait Sign, Hazard or Other), your notes and, for fish, species, hookup or catch, method, length and weight. Each mark also records the conditions at that spot when you dropped it.
Can I send my marks to my chartplotter?
Yes: export trips, waypoints and tracks as GPX files, which most chartplotters and fishing apps can import.
Can I navigate with Pelagic State?
No. Pelagic State is a planning aid, not a navigation system. Always carry official charts, check official marine forecasts and use proper navigation equipment.
Accounts and plans
What's the difference between Free, Lite and Pro?
Free gives you live SST Cloud Free and 25 marks. Lite adds the main layers, overlays, trips, waypoints and offline downloads. Pro adds every layer and Pro mode for stacking layers. Compare plans.
How does the free trial work?
Every new account gets Pro for 14 days, no card needed. One trial per person. When it ends, your account moves to Free automatically.
What happens to my marks if I change plan?
Nothing is deleted. Anything over your plan's limit stays viewable; you can add more once you're under the limit again or upgrade.
Do my marks and trips sync between devices?
Yes. Marks, waypoints and trips are saved to your account and sync when you're signed in and online. Display settings stay on each device.
How do I reset my password?
On the sign-in screen, choose the password reset option and follow the email.
How do I delete my account?
In the app, go to Settings, Profile & Account, Delete account. You'll be offered a GPX export of your marks and trips first, then asked to type DELETE to confirm. Deletion is permanent and needs an internet connection. If you can't get into the app, email support@pelagicstate.com from the address you signed up with. See our Privacy policy.
Can I change my profile icon?
Yes. In the app, go to Settings, Profile & Account, Profile icon, and choose one of the Pelagic State icons or your initial. It follows your account to every device.
Troubleshooting
The chart isn't showing the newest data.
Tap the “New ocean data” notice if it's showing, or refresh the page. If you're in Offline mode, turn it off while you have signal.
Something looks wrong on the chart.
Email support@pelagicstate.com with a screenshot, the layer, roughly where you were looking and the time. It really helps.
